ST. PAUL - St. Paul RCMP confirm a 24-year-old man was apprehended following an incident April 17 outside Racette School as buses were loading students at home time.

RCMP responded at about 3:30 p.m. after a report was received of an “an intoxicated male with a knife walking in traffic and taunting motorists with the weapon near Racette School on main street in St Paul,” according to the police report.

“RCMP quickly responded, located, and arrested the male without incident on 45th street along the east side of the Elementary School playground. The male was transported to St. Paul Detachment where he is awaiting a Judicial Interim Release hearing.

Due to charges not being sworn at this time, his name is not yet being released. However, RCMP indicate he will be facing “several weapons offences.”

In a statement to parents Wednesday, St. Paul Education superintendent Peter Barron informed them of the incident.

“Today, we were advised of a situation at École Racette School. This incident involved an unknown person walking on the street at bus loading time and behaving in an unsafe manner. A supervisor notified school administration and a bus driver used a two-way radio to notify our transportation department. The RCMP were called and members of the detachment immediately responded and located the individual who was apprehended off École Racette School property.”

In the letter, Barron extended appreciation to the RCMP for “their swift response and for maintaining the safety and well-being of our students and staff.”
