Winning streak ends for Lac La Biche Lakers

The Lakers, who have won 13 consecutive games, defeated the High Prairie Red Wings on Feb. 21 in High Prairie. The team, who holds second spot in the National Junior Hockey League (NJHL) North Division, lost at home to the first place Edson Eagles on Feb. 23.

LAC LA BICHE – While the Lac La Biche Lakers, who had won 13 consecutive games, managed to continue their winning streak during a 4-3 away game against the High Prairie Red Wings on Feb. 21, the streak ended two days later when the team dropped an 8-2 decision to the visiting Edson Eagles.

The Lakers, who joined the National Junior Hockey League (NJHL) for their inaugural season in October, were at the High Prairie Sports Palace on Feb. 21 to take on the High Prairie Red Wings. Lac La Biche forward Ethan Christian scored three of the goals in the 4-3 contest, while Regan Anderson had one.

Team captain Larry Flett assisted Christian on two of those goals, and Swampy helped with one. Christian was unassisted when he scored the first goal of the match. Patrick Bourque and Peyton Moneyas were on hand to assist Anderson with his goal.

The Lakers, who currently hold second place in their five-team NJHL North Division, lost 8-2 to the Eagles, who are in first place in the division, during an afternoon game at Lac La Biche’s Bold Centre on Feb. 23.

Roughly 10 minutes after Edson’s Landy Johnson scored the opening goal of the match between the two top squads in the NJHL North Division, Bourque, with help from teammates Braxton Pataneude and Flett, shot the puck past the Eagles’ net, getting Lac La Biche onto the scoreboard.

The Lakers would stay off the scoreboard into the dying minutes of the second period, when Anderson, assisted by Jaron Shirt and Zach Mazurenao, got his first and only goal of the match.

The Lakers have two more regular season games left to play before heading to the NJHL playoffs, which start on March 4. The team travels to Edson for another face-off against the Eagles on Feb. 28. The Lakers are back on home ice on March 1 to take on the Gibbons Pioneers. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
