Lac La Biche RCMP say an eight-year-old child is dead after a canoe incident in rough water on Lac la Biche Lake on Saturday.

RCMP say the youngster was in a canoe with a 13-year-old youth near Poplar Point when a sudden storm blew across the lake.

“Family and friends lost sight of their canoe and called for help,” said Lac La Biche RCMP Const. Roxanne Genereaux in a statement released Sunday. "RCMP and Fish & Wildlife officers attended the lake and immediately started searching.”

The 13-year-old was located unharmed and taken to the W. J. Cadzow Hospital for examination.

Rescuers found the eight year-old a short time later. He was unresponsive and CPR was initiated as he was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The name of the victim will not be released.
