The man accused in the 2017 shooting death of Lac La Biche father of three Micheal Mountain will be back in court on September 23 to begin a preliminary hearing to determine if there is evidence to send the case to trial.

Lloyd Wesley Boudreau, 25, of Lac La Biche, is facing first degree murder charge, plus charges of possessing a prohibited weapon and breaching probation relating to the October 28, 2017 shooting death of a Lac La Biche man in the doorway of his own home.

At the time, police say reports of a gunshot came into the Lac La Biche RCMP detachment in the early morning hours. Police arriving on the scene found a man suffering a gunshot wound. The man died in the Lac La Biche hospital that day. Police say the victim lived in the house with his wife and three children. The family had only recently moved into the home.

Days later, Boudreau was officially charged with first degree murder, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. At the time, police were also searching for a Buffalo Lake woman, Mandi Leigh Boucher. The 26 year old woman was reported missing the same day that Mountain was killed. Police said Boudreau and Boucher knew each other.

Running for over a year

Police searched for the pair for more than a year, following up on many leads and tips about them.  On January 20 of this year, tips lead police to a rural home near Two Hills, about 140 kilometres south of Lac La Biche where Boucher and Boudreau were arrested without incident.

Boudreau appeared on CCTV in the Lac La Biche Provincial Court  from the Edmonton Remand Centre on May 6 as lawyers set the date for the preliminary hearing.

Lawyers have set a date of July 26 of this year for a pre-trial conference to determine if a trial would be heard by judge and jury or judge alone.

In other cases relating to Mountain's shooting death, Boucher was charged with accessory to murder. Boudreau's mother, 54-year-old Margaret Simon was also charged with accessory to murder.

Both of those cases are still before the courts.

Bourdreau's preliminary hearing is set for three days.
