Petro Canada theft at lunchtime

Lac La Biche RCMP are searching for suspects after a man stole products from a local gas station at lunchtime on Wedneday.

Lac La Biche RCMP are searching for suspects after a man stole products from a local gas station at lunchtime on Wedneday.
RCMP were called to the Main Street Petro Canada convenience store just before noon today after the robbery alarm was triggered by staff. The suspect had left the area by the time police arrived.
Police say they have descriptions of a single male and a vehicle believed to be associated with the theft of food items.
Lac La Biche RCMP Const. Roxanne Genereaux said no weapon was reported to have been seen by the two clerks working in the store at the time.
The suspect ran from the store with an undisclosed amount of food products.
The same store was robbed in September of 2014 by a man with a gun. In that instance, the lone clerk was hit in the head with the weapon during the crime and suffered serious injuries. A 20-year-old area man was later arrested for the crime and convicted with armed robbery and assault.
The store is directly across the street from a local school. At the time of the robbery, the Light of Christ Catholic School was hosting the community Safety Day event.

RCMP believe the theft could be related to a string of vehicle thefts and 'gas-and-dash' crimes in the region over the last several months. The suspect vehicle in today's robbery is believed to have been stolen from the Bonnyville area in recent days.
In this case, police say they are confident they know who the suspects are.
"We believe we know who we are looking for," said Genereaux.

Another thing police are looking for in relation to this crime and many others like it, is community awareness.
The connection of the robbery to a recent increase in vehicle thefts has police again urging residents to lock their vehicles, remove keys from parked vehicles and take out any valuables from vehicles.
"We have to keep drilling it into people that they cannot leave their doors unlocked or keys in the vehicles," said Genereaux. "These crimes are happening more and more and people need to realize that they can do something that simple to reduce it."
She also said the public can continue to be vigilant reporting any suspicious activity to the RCMP.
