The Lac La Biche County's Environmental Services department hosted a gardening workshop —Gardening 101:Romaine Calm & Carrot On — at  McArthur Place last Thursday.

Around 15 community members gathered in the McArthur Room to learn the basics of the growing season.

Lindsay Kozakevich,  a local gardening enthusiast led the introductory course, starting with a gardening plan, some tips and tricks and eventually getting into detailed discussions about soil types, fertilizers, nutrient deficiencies and pathogens,  trouble-shooting and much more.

Kozakevich also provided  locals with some charts that displayed and compared information on good and bad companions when it comes to botanics.

Lindsay Kozakevich provided attendees with seeds and pots of soil. She hands out some seeds to Luke Muise as she demonstrates how to place them in the pot. While speaking with the POST, Kozakevich talked about the importance of hosting a gardening workshop — and of being a gardener — saying both  are a great way for community members to connect.

"I feel like the workshop was well-received by those in attendance. It is important for community members to have access to information that will help them achieve their goals and finish their projects," she said. "There is an independence gained from being a part of an agricultural community and being able to provide your family with food grown by your own hands."
Creating common goals and creating a few new green thumbs as they learn to plant a few more greens is important for community living, she said.
"I feel the community is more equipped to connect with each other when shared interests are explored together and information resources are readily available."
