Among the activities the Lakeland Scouts participated in last year was going to Nova Scotia for the Canadian Jamboree. The troop is pictured here packing their bags for that trip back in June. The troop and the division is now looking for new leaders.

Lakeland Scouts are looking for volunteer leaders to help organize, supervise and take care of pre-teen and teenage children for the upcoming year of scouting.

They're also looking parent leaders, who are helpers that can stay with the kids for the entire season -- or just help kids with specific activities at individual meetings.

“Currently have a need for at least three Cub leaders, at least one more Scout leader and were looking for parent leaders [parents who come in for a day to teach children specific skills or subjects],” said Lakeland Scouts group commissioner Jason Higgins, a former Boy Scout and Scout leaders who now makes sure they’ re running properly.

Higgins said that new leaders, who would be overseeing eight- to 10-year-olds in Cubs and 11- to 14-year-olds in Scouts, must pass a criminal record check and go through training before joining the Boy Scout troop. He also said prior experience would be an asset.

But on top of the bare minimum required, Higgins said it would be an asset for Scout leaders to have skills that are more intangible.

“We want them to be caring and have a love for children, patience and a love of the outdoors,” he said. “We also hope they are good at planning, as there is a lot of work involved to get it up and running.”

The group commissioner also said that some leaders are getting back into Scouting after decades of being out, noting that there are newer expectations for leaders.

“If you haven’ t been in a while, it’ s changed since the 70s and 80s,” he said. “It’ s more about what kids want then what the leaders want.”

But despite the workload and the challenges supervising children can bring, Higgins said the job is more than worthwhile.

“There’ s a sense of accomplishment, the kids tell you thank you,” he said. “Seeing a kid smiling and having a good time makes it all worthwhile.”

Lac La Biche Scouts are a mixed gender troop that meets in the basement underneath Canada Post in Lac La Biche. Higgins says he can be reached at 780-864-9889.
