Jadah Sparklingeyes is a great example of the character, determination and triumphant spirit of Alberta’s youngsters, says Minister of Children’s Services Danielle Larivee.
The 12 -year-old Grade 6 student has volunteered with several local organizations and raised funds for charities in and around the area, including the Road To Hope campaign. Last year, the youngster single-handedly raised more than $800 for the Road To Hope’s annual fun run. Her efforts won her a Great Kid Award from the province’s Children’s Services department.
“Every day, kids in Alberta take on challenges and accomplish incredible things in some of the most challenging circumstances,” said Larivee as her department again sends out the call for local nominations in the province’s Great Kid Awards. “The Great Kid Award is an opportunity to showcase these accomplishments. Their hope is contagious, their passion infectious, and these awards give these kids the recognition they deserve.”
Jadah was recognized last year with a Great Kid award for her tireless efforts with local organizations and overcoming some obstacles in life.
According to a recent news release sent out by the province to extend the nomination process to January 31 — and to remind the public of the recent award winners,
“Jadah has experienced many challenges in her short life ... Even though she has a lot on her plate, she has always helped others wherever and whenever she could,” notes the news release. “Last fall, she collected over $800 in pledges and completed a six kilometre run to support the Road to Hope Foundation. She volunteered in her community with a group called Pathfinders. In addition to her amazing community volunteerism, Jadah has also exercised her love for sports and maintains her schoolwork. Instead of letting darkness into her life, Jadah has chosen to be a light for herself and others. This light is why she is being honoured as a great kid.”
Provincial officials are now hoping other young Albertans follow suit.
The nominations celebrate remarkable young Albertans who have overcome challenges and made their local communities better. The award nomination is open to anyone between the ages of five and 18. Award recipients will be recognized at an award ceremony sponsored by the Fantasyland Hotel in Edmonton. Award winners and their families or caregivers will enjoy a night’s stay and a West Edmonton Mall attractions pass
