The area's Member of Parliament was in his Lac La Biche office on Monday morning to start the week by presenting a local resident with a special designation.

Fort McMurray-Cold Lake MP David Yurdiga presented Lavon Fleming with a federal Community Spirit award, plus a parliamentary pin and a medallion representing the riding.

Fleming is the current president of the Lac La Biche Pow Wow Days Association, and has been part of several recent events in the Lac La Biche area, including the Lord Strathcona's Mounted Horse Troop's performances at the Lac La Biche Agricultural Grounds and the RCMP Musical Ride performances at the Bold Center. She and her husband Lloyd Fleming have also donated and sponsored local events and projects.

Yurdiga credited Fleming for her commitment to the community either as a main organizer or a dedicated supporter.

"With all the hard work that you have done with events like the Pow Wow Days  ... sometimes words are not enough to recognize people in the riding who are really making a difference," he said as he presented the certificate.

Not by herself

Fleming was grateful of the recognition, but gave much of the credit to the strong support system she works with at home, in organizations and in the community. She said the importance of volunteering and supporting the community is part of a legacy passed on from others.

"I want to carry n the traditions of those people who have passed. They built this community, and it's so very important that we carry that support on," she said.

The Community Spirit awards recognize community dedication and spirit. The awards are handed out by Canada's MPs in their home riding to selected residents.
