Coolers bring warm thanks from Pow Wow Days

Members of the Lac La Biche Pow Wow and Fish Derby Association presented a warm wish with some cold storage coolers to a pair of local groups earlier in September.

Pow Wow Association treasurer John Mondal presented both the Lac La Biche Agricultural Society and Royal Canadian Legion with  coolers that they can use at future events.

The  coolers were presented by the Lac La Biche Pow Wow and Fish Derby Association because they wanted to give both organizations a gift in recognition of all their hard work over the Pow Wow Days event that took place over the July 13 weekend.

For the past year, the Lac La Biche Pow Wow and Fish Derby Association worked closely with these two local organizations, which was something that, “has not been done in a long time,” said Pow Wow Days Association Secretary Lavon Fleming. Both organizations were instrumental as well as a great resource in the success of the Pow Wow Days event this past July.

“Both [local organizations] significantly helped with providing ample volunteers to the annual celebration weekend. We couldn’t have done it without them.” she said.

Marge Langevin, President of the Lac La Biche Agricultural society, and Dan Stevens, President of the Legion, were on hand to accept the Pow Wow Associations token during informal meetings at both the Lakeland Agricom and Legion on Sept. 7.

Langevin is excited to have the cooler to help store concession items. Stevens is looking forward to having the cooler for events at the Legion, including their steak night.

The Lac La Biche Pow Wow and Fish Derby also received a provincial Community Initiatives Grant for $32,788.00. The 2018 Pow Wow Board initiated the grant application last December, with Mondal spearheading the project and getting assistance from the administration of the Lac La Biche County.

The grant money will be going towards next year Pow Wow’s event operating costs.

The 2019 Pow Wow and Fish Derby Board will be able to apply for another provincial community initiatives grant as long as the application is submitted before the deadline, as well as having the Grant application department accept the 2019 application.

The 2018 Pow Wow and Fish Derby board is currently completing all follow-up reports as dictated by government regulatory bodies, awaiting bank statements to prepare financial statements for reporting structures, winter storing of all Association Assets, as well as closing off position files for the 2019 Board.

A General membership meeting will be called, followed with an annual general meeting that will be called soon.
