Avid archer welcomed into Sports Hall of Fame

Rene Schaub has had a passion in Archery for over 20 years and has done everything from coaching to judging.

Schaub is the president of the Lac La Biche Lakeland Archers and has spent countless hours coaching, encouraging and guiding young and old archers to shoot for regionals, provincials, nationals, winter games and even worlds.

In 2002 he completed his coaching course and brought his first team to Alberta Winter Games. He also completed his judging course so the club could host registered shoots.

With his judging certification, Schaub hosted the first indoors target provincial in 2007.

“This passion for putting on a shoot took over as I kept searching for new challenges and more elaborate shoots,” said Schaub.

Schaub wanted to expand to the outdoors and create a world-class facility to host field and target shoot so after countless hours of working and building structures, his vision came together and he hosted the first ever-successful field and target shoot in the summer of 2008.

His daughter and fellow archer with the Lakeland Archers Emma Thomas said “his passion for the sport is never over looked and has helped pave so many young archers paths to success.”

Schaub and his daughter, Emma, have been shooting together since the beginning. They have shot regionally, provincially, nationally, and worldly, and hold a national record together, being the first father and daughter to place first at a national event.

In 2014 he completed his national judging course and later continental-judging course in 2015 so he could experience the passion of archery in other countries.

Schaub managed team Canada in France for worlds in 2017.

“Anyone who knows Rene knows that the word no does not exist in his vocabulary, said Thomas. He is always willing to take on a challenge of any magnitude.”

In 2014 he put on the biggest 3D field and target event that took place at the Herb Erickson Archery Range.

Schaub has decided to go one step further and host a world 3D shoot, which is scheduled to take place in 2019.

This will be the first time that worlds will be held in North America, and he is making it all happen in Lac La Biche a hamlet of 2,520 people.

On November 28, Lac La Biche County revealed the first nine inductees of the new Sports Hall of Fame at the Bold Center Rene Schaub was one of these inductees.

“I felt very honored and humbled to be selected with the group they [Lac La Biche County] have picked and it is great for the sport of archery,” said Schaub.

Schaub will join alongside Mayor Omer Moghrabi, Rene Bourque, Barry Chwedoruk, Bonnie McDonald, Maurice Richard, Eugene Lebas, Edgar Ladouceur and Jules Owchar and receive his photo on the wall and a write-up of his accomplishments among the other eight that have been honoured.
