A new chapter on Christmas giving

On the first day of Christmas, my true love read to me ... a book. In fact, avid readers or parents looking for a unique and educational gift for little ones can now get one book, 12 books or all 24 books for an advent-style reading gift.

On the first day of Christmas, my true love read to me ... a book.  In fact, avid readers or parents looking for a unique and educational gift for little ones can now get one book, 12 books or all 24 books for an advent-style reading gift.

Lac La Biche's Community Learning office is once again offering their Gift of Literacy program again this year, with new books available for great prices for area families and individuals.

"We have books for all ages," says Community Learning's Colleen Pierce, explaining that the office has thousands of new books including current best-sellers and children's books. "You can come in and buy a new book for five dollars — which is a great price for a gift for anyone, or you can buy 12 books for $50 and 24 books for $100. It's a great idea for an advent calendar of books. You can read one with your kids every night leading up to Christmas."

All the money raised from the sales goes towards purchasing more books for community use in schools and reading programs.

Community Learning offers literacy programming for families and offers many on and off-site projects, including the community book shelves. The 24 stand-alone kiosks are spaced throughout the community and provide books for people to take away with them.

"The main goal is to get books into the hands of kids," says Pierce.

Anyone interested in the Christmas book program can visit the Community Learning Office in Lac La Biche, located just east of the Ginger House restaurant on 101 Avenue.
