ST. PAUL – The St. Paul Fire Department responded to a fire at an apartment on May 6, and while no injuries were reported, firefighters did help resuscitate a pet cat.
According to information from the fire department, the apartment was under intense heat and smoke conditions. Firefighters responded to the call at about 4 p.m.
The fire was extinguished, and no other suites were affected. There was some smoke in the hallways, said Fire Chief Trevor Kotowich, but firefighters used fans to blow it out.
“Only one suite where the fire originated was affected and left untenable for the time being,” he explained.
There were “no injuries to report, as no one was home at the time, but during the search firefighters did discover a cat that was gravely ill,” said the fire chief.
Firefighters moved the cat to safety and administered oxygen for about 15 minutes.
The cat has been reunited with the owner and is expected to make a full recovery.
Kotowich says the fire is still under investigation as of May 8, “But it appears to be accidental.”
