48th Pow Wow Days festival kicks off this Friday

It’s once again time for the biggest event of the year in Lac La Biche, and it all starts Thursday evening with the senior’s fish fry.

Lac La Biche County mayor Peter Kirylchuk said the fish fry is one of his favourite events at Pow Wow Days, along with seeing the Citizen of the Year awarded.

For the mayor, the visitors are just as much a part of Pow Wow as the events are.

"You get a great cross section of people coming to this event," he said, adding it’s a great time to reconnect with friends and family who return for the annual event.

This year sees the return of many people’s favourite events, along with some new things as well. There’s so much going on that nearly anybody can find something that matches their interests, said the mayor.

"There’s something here for everybody," he said.

The Lac La Biche and District Chamber of Commerce has organized a street festival for Friday afternoon that will see Main Street transformed into an outdoor market and entertainment area. Businesses, local artisans, craftspeople and community groups will have booths set-up along the street, and inside the Kinsmen Centre, while performers play on a stage by Value Drug Mart.

Music has always been a big part of Pow Wow, and while this year won’t feature the Homemade Jam talent contest, Pow Wow visitors can get their musical fix from a number of live performances over the three-day event.

For those looking for a more interactive experience, there are a wide variety of activities to get involved in, including the triathlon, sailboat race, horseshoe tournament, baseball and softball tournaments, as well as fiddling and jigging competitions.

Pow Wow is a great way to show that Lac La Biche is a place of friendly faces, too, said the mayor.

"We really are welcoming by nature," he said.
