Like Canada winning the most gold medals at their home-based Olympics, the Dr. Swift Middle School Ti-Cats teams also finished their invitational tournament at the top of the podium.

Both the boys and girls Ti-Cats basketball teams roared through their competitors at Saturday’s all day event.

Coaching staff was impressed with the play of their young, but experienced teams

"With the girls, most of them Grade 8 players started in Grade 6, so they’ve got three years of playing together," said coach James Murphy. "The boys are the same thing."

While the local teams from Plamondon didn’t fair as well, with the boys team being knocked out in the semi-finals and the girls finishing in last place, they did well for first-season squads.

"This is their first time playing together," said coach Karen Grygus of the boys team, "and there’s never been a junior girls basketball team in Plamondon until now."

Describing players on both teams as "green, green, green," Grygus said they played "superbly" for being such rookie teams.

"The boys only started practicing together in January."

Next up for the Swift Ti-Cat teams is the district finals, held this Thursday afternoon.

With the districts also taking place in Lac La Biche, coaches and players are hoping again that home court advantage will have golden results.
